In the book, Olive begins to question the nature of reality - as in, are we in some sort of simulation, or maybe an alternate universe of some kind? Because reality seems too peculiar, and filled with too many coincidences, to be exactly convincing. ![]() John Mandel’s new novel, “Sea of Tranquility,” is a novelist, Olive Llewellyn, who, like Mandel, was a talented but obscure mid-list author when she published a hugely successful book about a plague a few years before a real plague arrived, and who, after the plague’s arrival, became even more well known for having published an unsettlingly prescient novel. To be fair, this isn’t like precisely vampires in the sense that no one really uses that word – but they drink human blood! I was quite surprised at how much I found myself getting lost in this book. Overall, from the first page to the last, Lindsey Klingele has a talent for keeping her reader’s attention in this classic coming of age fantasy tale. Readers will anxiously await the continuation of Liv and Cedric’s story. In its final chapters, The Marked Girl comes to a supremely satisfying close with an exciting setup for the next installment of the series. ![]() There were some plot-twists that felt a little too convenient and predictable, but fans of Urban and Epic fantasy will enjoy the more unusual aspects of Klingele’s story.ĭespite some familiar YA tropes, fans shouldn’t let that deter them from what promises to be a riveting series that is only just getting started. The Marked Girl encompasses a fast paced plot with excellent world building, three-dimensional characters and exceptional dialogue. In her debut novel, Klingele brings the fantasy world into the real world-a premise I found intriguing from the first line of the synopsis. While somewhat predictable, The Marked Girl definitely puts a fresh and unique spin on a classic plot. A typical fantasy tale turned upside down, taking the reader on an exciting journey through colliding worlds. ![]() ![]() ![]() Researchers estimate that only 10- 28% of marine life is currently known, and most knowledge stems from researchers based in Europe, the US and Japan. Derivative of 70s style dystotian fiction (I.e., Logan’s Run, Soylvent Green), Wool managed to breathe life into stale scenarios. I tweeted about it, and called it a kind of an adult Hunger Games. The major characters are older-an old sheriff, an aging mayor-and there are female characters that don’t strictly adhere to action-girl badass/ Mary Sue tropes, which is refreshingly adult. The first four sections are extended character studies that move the story forward while leisurely exploring the dystopian/post-apocalyptic worldscape of underground warrens, Ruined Earth and complex secrets. The author has been considered something of a golden boy, a success story from the story mines of self-publishing. ![]() I finished reading Hugh Howey’s novel/series Wool, after reading the hype surrounding the book. ![]() |
